Blood and Fire and Pillars of Smoke

(inspired by Joel 2:30)

The Lord sits regal on His throne,

He sends His angels to avenge

The blood of Innocents who died

Before they had a chance to live.

His fire flies out from Heaven’s place

His flaming sword shall sing

His enemies hide their evil face

Before the coming of the King.

The very earth brings forth His wrath,

Belching plumes of darkness cold,

Hiding men from light and warmth,

Consuming farm and field below.

Blood and fire and smoke shall earth devour,

The Day of Vengeance hastens to obey

The will of Him whose voice the ages hear,

Kings tremble as He summons them by name.

Let God the Maker bring down fire and smoke,

Let God the Father launch His final plan

To make again the heavens and the earth

With the glory of a pure and unstained land.

The Day of the Lord is here for man to rue,

The Captain of His Hosts rides forward now,

His armies march, His banner flies, His trumpeter will blow

The signal of the Coming of the Lord.

Make fast His way!  Let us rejoice

Who long to see His Hand,

Lift up your head, stretch for the sky

And join His fearsome band.

He comes to rule the earth

This world long lost to sin

Reclaimed with blood Divine

By the Son who died within.

He comes to make things new,

The cycle shall depart,

A golden age will now ensue

And life eternal start.

He came to end the pain

Of death, decay, and misery.

His power kills the stain

Of Sin and shame with Calvary

He now completes the waiting task

By making all things new,

With blood and fire and pillars of smoke

He re-creates it true.

Grateful

5/12/23

I’m grateful for the life I have; my family, friends, and work,

My Lord has been so good to me, though I have often shirked

My duties to my God and King, He’s patient all the while,

May my one goal forever be to make my Savior smile.

I claim the promise of His peace, I claim His healing too,

I pray that I can always be someone that He finds true,

My life is coming to its end some way in days to come

So let me live it with the bread of gratitude, not crumbs

No leftover thanks or hasty words before a meal to say,

Instead, a daily exercise of giving Him His praise,

By living in His light today and letting others see

His grace so full, His mercy fair, His Spirit within me.

This is the way to show our God how grateful I can be,

To let His love come shining through to everyone I see.

RAIN

1/3/2023

The rain falls upon a sodden world, a world of hopes and dreams

The cresting flood may sweep away all plans with swollen streams,

Or perhaps the rain will only cause the hidden seed to bloom,

And fill our world with life and joy that bursts from dirt-caked tombs.

The thunder sounds, the lightning flash, the wind howls in the air,

And all creation wonders when we’ll see a day so fair,

As what we had before the storm, before the rain and hail,

When sunlight filtered through the trees and shone upon the vale.

The day will pass, the night will too, and then we’ll see the sun,

A storm may come, but quickly goes, as time fulfills its run,

We all must know that rain must come, it’s vital for our earth,

Without the rain, there’d be no life, no coming of rebirth.

So seize the storm, and use the day, and recognize its worth

Understand the turning of the wheel that leads to mirth.

For happiness will have no price that shows without the pain,

That comes from standing in the dark and singing through the rain.

A World Together
(a reflection on the pandemic sweeping the world)
By Steve Loggins
April 16, 2020

Who would have thought that we could come together in this way?
Who would have thought that this could make all people stop & pray?
Who could predict that we would all be safer in our homes?
Who could have seen the sorrow and the ache of feeling alone?

It’s such a strange and difficult time, a time of loss and gain,
A time when people fear and hope, a time of joy and pain.
A person dies, the family has to abbreviate their plans,
Folks are struggling with their grief, no hugs or soothing hands.

We all have time to think about our life and what comes next,
How will our world look after, what are the last effects?
We are in this thing together, for better or for worse,
We might as well then grasp the truth of our finite universe.

We are connected in so many ways, this virus it has shown,
That the very air we breathe today, it’s not just ours alone.
Our money, talents, time, and work, they are part of a bigger scene,
Than we really want to recognize, that we’d rather have unseen.

We want our world to stay so small, just us and those we love,
And maybe just a few more folks, but not many not of blood.
But this whole world belongs to God, He owns it, lock and key,
It’s not our choice that matters here, it’s HIS to have, you see.

And maybe this is just His way, to set us on our heels,
Like Babel was, so long ago, so man would then appeal
to a sovereign God for mercy, for Grace, and Charity,
For we think too much of our intellect and our human dignity.

I’m just a man who’s hoping to make sense of what I see today,
I may be wrong, and probably am, but I guess I’m wired that way.
There has to be a reason, a purpose to it all,
And I prefer to think it’s more than just a fatal random call.

Our World has come together like no time I can recall,
I think that we may see some good come to our spinning ball,
If people keep on seeking out the Lord, our God and king,
Then we may see His Spirit sweep across the land and bring…..

A beggar meets The Prince

A Beggar meets The Prince
Steve Loggins
1/5/2020

A beggar met The Prince one day while walking down the road,
The beggar’s clothes were soiled and frayed from traveling with a load.

His back was bent with a heavy bag he’d gathered on the way,
His garments were but filthy rags for he had no place to stay.

He saw The Prince through rheumy eyes caked with dust and grime,
He saw his clothes and fantasized, “How I wish his robe was mine!”

The Prince put up a hand and stopped the pauper on his way,
The beggar knelt, and then he dropped his load that fateful day.

“What do you have”, The Prince then asked, “in the heavy bag you carry?”
The poor man answered very fast, “Some things I need to bury.”

“They are but things I value high, yet no one else would care,
Some junk I picked up by and by; all common things, not rare.”

“I would see your sack of things, perhaps we’ll make a trade.”
“Oh no, your Majesty, I bring you nothing goodly made.”

“I still would see your wares today, show them, let me decide.”
The beggar bowed his head to say, “As you insist, I’ll open wide…

My bag of things that have no cost, just do not laugh at me,
For all that’s here, so much was lost, I traded my security.”

The bag now opened, held three things; a stone, a book, a rolled up scrap,
Three items held by a lot of strings which the beggar had round them wrapped.

The stone was black and made so hard a chisel could not mark,
A heart shaped form that couldn’t guard the glow beneath the dark.

The book was plain and, O, so worn, its pages often read,
But as the prince looked thereupon, the beggar shook his head.

“My memories of bad and good, of joy and sorrow too,
I did the best with what I could, it must seem small to you.”

The rolled up scrap was then unfurled, like a flag for a parade,
And on it was a painted world the man himself had made.

“I’ll take them all”, The Prince then said, “but not with strings attached.”
The beggar shook his angry head and, in his haste, he snatched

The scrip and book and stony heart from The Noble Prince that day,
“I’ll not be having any part in giving my things away!”

“You misunderstand My offer, son, you have mistaken My intent,
I want your things to be re-done, but only if you relent.”

“It all will be coming back today, just shining, fresh, and new,
You have to trust in what I say, I’ll give all things to you.”

The beggar, trembling, laid down his bag, filled with broken things,
He asked The Prince about his rags, and what value they might bring.

The Prince then gave a winsome smile and took off his own coat
And laid it on the meager pile and on that, placed a note

“I, The Prince, do hereby swear to all who care to read
That this, my robe the beggar wears, is his to meet his need.”

The beggar’s stunned, afraid to speak, He’s scared to take the deal
Afraid his things were far too weak, such a trade could not be real,

New clothes for old, new things for old; no, The Prince could not be true,
To see some monstrous game unfold, some trick the Gentry do

To mock the poor and feeble man, or catch him in some trap,
It’s just a false and mischief plan, he’s waiting for the jaws to snap.

He grabbed his threadbare rags and held, and glowered at The Prince,
But then he spied a tear that trailed, to him it made no sense,

Why should The Prince spill tears today?  Why would He care so much?
If the beggar went his lonesome way bearing his load of such,

Wearing his rags and making his way in a world of dark and gloom
Until he buried it all away in an isolated tomb?

The beggar softened, looked again, and saw the heartfelt pain
Of The Prince who offered up His hand, who had nothing He could gain.

He op’ed his clutch and took out all, of the things He’d hid away
He laid them down on a short stone wall, it was there the three things lay

He cut the strings that bound them there, and offered up his heart,
His world, his book, and then his cares, his ragged clothing for a start.

The Prince then shed his robe of white, and wore a crown of thorns,
And said, “My child, I take the fight, and wear your rags...Now, be reborn!”

In an instant then, the beggar changed, his melancholy ceased,
He found his world now rearranged, its value now increased.

His heart was now a softer one, not hard and black like stone,
Reflecting light from God’s own son, with a loving and forgiving tone.

His memories of days gone by, now gave him time to pause
Of how to fix things where they lie, or reconcile his flaws

That hurt so many in his life, His want to make it right,
His family, friends, so filled with strife, His path now bathed in light.

To his amazement, now he wore; clothed from head to toe,
The Prince’s robe and even more, he had a little glow,

The scrap upon which his world was built, now featured but a cross,
He found he’d lost his heavy guilt, his world was not a loss,

For in its place, his Savior stood, who gave His world to him,
A life not ruined but always good, a world that never dims.

He found his path was altered now, he saw the way so clear,
The kingdom of The Prince he vowed was his celestial sphere.

The Prince had made the trade, you see; and the beggar went away
With all the things He’d guaranteed the pauper on that day.

He had new clothes of righteousness, The Prince’s robe of white,
a fleshly heart of graciousness, a world not dim, but bright.

But more he had, than he ever thought, a new home was his too,
The palace of the king was bought with blood for those made new.

The Prince took his hand and led him then, o’er the straight and narrow road,
He thought of places he had been and what The Prince now showed,

And realized the path was true, the destination sure
His life was precious, this he knew, and his Master’s way was pure.

Forgotten were his rags of old, forgotten was his scrap,
He found his course was lined with gold that plotted out his map

To reach The Father’s palace now, the beggar begs no more,
For The Prince has demonstrated how a beggar finds His door.

I AM

I AM
8/14/18

I am Judas, betrayer of Blood,
cursed by my traitorous acts against God,
I am Peter, denier of Him,
my boasts are so hollow, my faith is so dim,
I am John, who sleeps through the night,
while Jesus is praying I might see the Light,
I am Thomas, who doubts in His power,
unless my eyes see it, I won’t last an hour,
I am Andrew, I am James,
who want to be noticed, who want to have fame,
I am Pilate, searching for fact,
longing for truth; but, instead, I backtracked,
I am Barabbas, deserving to die;
He took my place on a cross lifted high,
I am the soldier, gambling for gain,
who wins a few bets, but loses his name,
I am the thief, begging for grace,
He grants His mercy, He gives me a place,
I am the Priest who rails against God,
who challenges power, who’s blind to His Word,
I am the sentry who shoves up a spear,
water and blood flowing down then appear,
I am the guard, who stands in the night,
to keep the dead in, but falls in the light,
I am Mary, come to the tomb,
to grieve o’er the dead, but finds life has bloomed,
I am the One, crucified for Man’s Sin,
I now live forever, won’t you let Me in?

By Thy Power

By the power of the blood of the Lamb, help me be more than I am,

By the power of Golgotha's pain, help me to live life again,

By the power of Thy written word, let Thy voice inside me be heard,

By the power of Dying to self, let life everlasting be felt,

By the power of Jesus the Christ, let me live though His sacrifice,

By the power of The Almighty One, reduce me until I have won,

By Thy power alone and not mine, may I let the gospel light shine,

By Thy life living in me, let Jesus be what they see.

A Kiss

A Kiss
By Steve Loggins
10/9/2014

To kiss the face of one who loves us with unfailing love,
Is a privilege of the highest sort, a gift from God above,
A lover’s kiss can mean the world, a mother’s kiss can soothe
A stranger’s kiss is not comfortable, away from it we move,
But to kiss the face of Jesus, is a privilege none can claim,
Except for Judas Iscariot, betrayal is his fame.
It seems so strange that a kiss should be the signal of that deed,
It makes you wonder how it worked to fulfill God’s prophecies.
A kiss should be a sign of love, affection, and of joy,
Instead of darkened deeds of lust, a kiss should not destroy.
To kiss the one who loves us all for a purpose dark and bad,
Is an affront to love’s own dignity, it makes the viewers mad,
To think that such a simple act could set in motion death,
To the lover of the kisser’s soul, to the one who paid our debt.
I’m just a foolish writer, with a modest intellect,
But even I can tell you, that a kiss should never wreck
A person’s life, a person’s home, a person’s livelihood,
But a foolish kiss can do it, a kiss misunderstood.
So take your care to kiss the ones who love you in return,
And never with a motive that other’s can’t discern.

Moonlight through a Stained Glass Window
8/13/14

I opened my eyes to see a blurred image on the floor,
Confused at first, I had to think, I needed to know more.

It was just the moonlight shining through my bedroom window panes,
A window made of colored glass, a window that’s been stained.

It hit me then, the compilation that those factors made,
Reveals to me my character, of how I have betrayed.

I am the moonlight shining down, a reflection of The Son,
I am the glass that’s stained by sin, fractured and redone.

But most of all, I am the blurred image of God’s grace,
It is no wonder others toil to see His Loving Face
 In me.

Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem

Horace, poet of ages past, reminds us "seize the day",
Make the most of life before we die and fly away,

The Talmud also goads us "if not now, then when"?
Instilling in us an urgency of living now, not then.

Those who choose the creed of pleasure or fulfillment in one's work,
Are doomed to disappointment, both fail to be enough

For the day is short and full of pain, or joy, or something else,
A dullness creeps within the vale, the golden moment melts

Like ice in boiling water, it vanishes and dies,
our life is but a vapor, says the preacher, over lies

That today is all we have to live, so live it without care,
A trap that is, of making much of temporary fare.

There is a Day Eternal, where time itself stands still,
We seize that day through faith in God, according to His will.

Poets die, and so do all who try to seize the day,
but there's a Cross outside of time, seize it to live always.

"Passion"

Great
Drops
Of Blood
Flow  down  in  Love  and  mercy
Parched  lips  cry  out  for  water
The
Bread
Of Life
Is
broken
for
Men
to eat
and
Live
Forever.

Conquest
By Steve Loggins
2/27/13

Light meets darkness and collides in space,
a wind results rushing every place,
Overcome by photons and astrons  so bright,
the darkness flees before the light.
Yet where no light is, darkness will reign,
the shadow world claiming a majority frame.
A creeping change has taken place,
a retreat of light in an increasing pace,
The shadow lands are growing large,
and light condenses before the charge
Of stygian night with powerful force,
threatening to snuff out the smoldering voice
Of right and wrong, of bad and good,
we fail to see  what in light we once could.
Yet light condensed, a laser becomes,
with pinpoint accuracy igniting the sun,
And light resumes in quickening speed,
dispelling the darkness, revealing our need
For God.

Thankful

Thankful

11/15/2012
by Steve Loggins

Of all the things I'm thankful for,
of all the things I love,
I cannot help but linger on
what God sent from above.

His Precious Son named Jesus,
His Blood shed on Calvary,
His sweet Holy Spirit within us,
His written Word living in me.

His Promises of life forever,
The stories of His grace,
He's with me in all my endeavors,
I know His loving arms' embrace.

I love my family, friends, and kin,
I'm thankful for my wife.
But next to Him, they can't begin
to fill up all my life.

I'm thankful for His calling,
I'm thankful for His love,
I'm thankful that my God and King
redeemed with His blood.

The mundane things we think about
when we often bow and pray,
Are temporal and soon wear out
in the turning of our days.

But there are things eternal,
these I'm thankful for,
His peace in me supernal,
His life forevermore.

God is good, this we know,
For our Bibles tell us so,
Those of us that to Him belong
should be thankful all year long.

Deception

Deception
By Steve Loggins
10/5/2012

A wooden horse called friendship hides within its hollow frame,
A Captain of the Enemy, Deception is his name.
With him, hidden in the dark, poised and coiled to strike,
Are other foes named “lies” and “false”, a host of them alike.

Crouched and ready to kill and maim those that let them in,
Self-Indulgence takes the point to kill the guards within.
Rationalization finds the king and tells him all is well,
While all around him sentries fall to silent knives of hell.

The castle’s taken with nary a shot, the Enemy has won
A victory for sin and death, a heartache for God’s Son.
The King is taken, the Queen is held, in chains of Hate’s despair
The wooden horse is empty now, the kingdom now aware.

Betrayal snaps to attention, to report the job is done,
Deception shows a crafty smile, and barks they’ve only halfway won.
“There’s more to do, there’s more to snare”, he tells his elite troop
“So get back out and do your job, we’ve more enemies to dupe”

“Resistance to our fiendish plans will come with dawning day,
We must make ready to resist the Truth and carry all captives away.”
“We must guard our chains of Hate, forged by Anger, Pain and Lies,
There is no room for Mercy here, watch out for Grace’s spies.”

The orders given, the prisoners chained together in a line,
And marched toward the gates of Hell, away from Hope Divine.
It seems like all is going well in Satan’s covert plan,
To undermine the Grace of God, and condemn His failing man.

But breaking on the darkened path, comes Courage, Truth, & Love
With winging swords of Mercy, Grace, and Justice from above.
“Let them go! They’re free indeed, by Blood they cannot die”,
Says Jesus, Captain of the Host, who strangles every Lie.

Deception snarls and cowers back, but rallies in defiance,
“They forged these chains themselves, you know, I only hold alliance
And claim the right of victory because the law is sure
That sin and death will now prevail, this work is now secure”

“Away with You! Away with Hate! Away with Sin and Death!
I fought that fight on Calvary’s brow, you lost as I gave my final breath!”
“These slaves are Mine! They sometimes fail to be all that they can be
But you have no right to drag them to Hell, I say that they are free.”

And with this word, the chains dissolve in light and harmony,
While Satan’s hosts turn tail and run with shrieks of cacophony.
The captives kneel and thank the King who will always set them free,
If they but pray and bow to Him, and come on bended knee.

Abortion

Abortion
By Steve Loggins 10/2/2012

Blood covers my hands and drips to the floor,
It flows down the hallway and out of the door,
It reaches the street to join in the flood,
For every home shares in this river of blood.

Life is so beautiful, why does it cease?
Why kill an infant before it can breathe?
The miracle of birth denied to so many,
We are to blame, in our land of plenty.

Our passions betray us, we love the wrong things,
Never knowing the joy that a baby can bring,
We see them as something that stands in our way,
Instead of our future, we think of only today.

Blood fills our streets, Blood fills the land,
Instead of life-giving, it’s shed by our hands,
What a waste! What a tragedy unfolds right now,
As the Good Lord in Heaven sadly shakes His head down.

Then rising up indignant with His children’s awful ways,
He says “I’ve had enough of this! It’s time to End All Days!”
“I’ll take my gift of life from man, they waste it all away!
They’d rather have death, so death they’ll have – Eternity to pay!”

Life and death, each day we choose
When we choose death, it is us who lose,
Life is so precious, life is so rare
Don’t waste it, despise it; for it may not stay here.
