Mistakes

Mistakes of the past
Haunt my dreams of today
Mistakes of today
Spoil my dreams for tomorrow
Mistakes forged in fear
Of failing to be
Someone important
Someone to see
Mistakes forged in pride
Of soul’s vanity
A baseless search
Of my imaginings
I really quite wonder
At my failure to close
Doors to the past
The Lord only knows
Why I wake in the night
With rememberings
That make my heart burn
With embarrassment’s sting.
Mistakes of the past
Cloud my judgment today
Mistakes of today
Threaten goals for tomorrow
Learn from the past
Mistakes of my youth
Give up their ghosts
Keep only the truth
The lessons we learn
From mistakes we have made
Are the rungs of life’s ladder
That end at the grave.
